Maximize Your Grocery Savings with Discontinued Items

During grocery shopping excursions, we keep an eye out for super low prices due to discontinued or clearance items. These prices can be great on their own, but when paired with a coupon you can really maximize your savings and score great deals. Often stores discontinue items that they no longer wish to carry because they are not hot sellers. Most discontinued items and the ones our family purchases are fine products with good expiration dates that are just not popular with the majority of customers in a certain location.

These are a few of the discontinued items we got very inexpensively or free this week:

Target: Bear Naked 100% Pure & Natural Banana Nut Cereal $2.65
Use $1.50 peelie coupons on each bag of cereal
Only $1.15 a bag! We were lucky to find this deal...we were in the right place at the right time.

Sam's Club: Spice Islands Spicy Pizza & Pasta Grinder $1.11
$1.11 No Coupons Required.

Giant Food Store: McCormick Spices $1.14 - $1.79.
Use $.75/1 McCormick Spice or Herb from 1/3 Sunday Paper.
After doubling, FREE Cinnamon Sugar Grinder! Grill Mates Montreal Steak Grinder, Cocoa Chile Blend, and Mediterranean Spiced Sea Salt are all very inexpensive (less than $.50 each)!
Money Saving Tip: There are frequently lots of discontinued spices all priced less than $1.50 that would be FREE after coupon doubling.

Giant Food Store: Good Earth Organic Good Night Herbal Tea $1.79
Use $1/1 Good Earth Tea
Only $.79 for a box of 18 individually wrapped organic tea bags! They also had a few other flavors discontinued at the same price.

The only problem with purchasing discontinued items is when you really love the product you purchased you may not be able to get it again. At least not at the store that discontinued the product, but do not fear, you can always check for it at another store or on the Internet. Chances are someone sells it online.

One more tip from experience, be sure the product matches the discontinued tag as products can get moved around. If your store doesn't have price check scanners, try to match the UPC to the tag or watch the check-out carefully. Happy Saving!
