Eco-Friendly Gardening Choice - Tree Ring Mulch Mats

With caring for a new baby, my husband and I just don’t have as much time these days to dedicate to keeping up with all the weeding and yard work.  That doesn’t mean we don’t want our yard to look good and well maintained.  After stumbling across recycled rubber tree ring mulch mats on our last outing to Sam’s Club, we decided it was worth purchasing 3 to use around the trees in our front yard.

They were very easy to install by just removing enough sod around the tree to fit the mulch mat.  My favorite feature is that they don’t allow weeds to grow through, but they do allow water and nutrients to pass right through to nourish the tree.  My husband likes that it is easy to mow the grass around the mulch mats making yard work a breeze. They are dual sided offering either red or dark walnut colors to match your desired landscaping style and are available in several sizes.  We chose to use the larger 36” size on all 3 trees with the dark walnut brown color in our front yard.  Another great aspect of these mulch mats is that you can cut the center circle larger when the tree grows.  They are made of 100% recycled rubber, but look like real hardwood mulch once installed.  Four tree rings equal one recycled tire, keeping them out of landfills.  I feel good about utilizing recycled products to help the planet, while also helping to save time from reducing weeding and saving money by not having to purchase mulch year after year.  Each mat has an expected lifespan of 10+ years.  So far, we are very happy with our purchase and look forward to seeing how our new mulch mats hold up over time.

If you’re not a Sam’s Club member or they are already sold out at your local store (they are a seasonal item), you can purchase them from Amazon.
